Maggie

"I call upon Maggie every day to help me put down my mantle of grief, dream my wildest dreams and not let my fears hold me back from doing what is right."

— Susan Omilian, Maggie's aunt and author, The Thriver Workbook: Journey from Victim to Survivor to Thriver!

Remembering Maggie

A Call to Action

MaggieWhen Susan Omilian received a phone call in the middle of the night on October 18, 1999, she couldn’t believe that Maggie, her nineteen-year-old niece, had been shot and killed on a college campus by her ex-boyfriend. No one had seen the danger Maggie was in — not even Maggie herself.

Outraged and shocked that her niece did not living beyond the moment of realizing she was being abused, Susan created the My Avenging Angel Workshops™ in Maggie's honor and has helped hundreds of abused women since 2001 move on to live happy, productive lives. Susan also dedicated The Thriver Workbook: Journey from Victim from Survivor to Thriver! to Maggie.

The book's dedication reads: "To Maggie, with the hope that this book will inspire women as her amazing life and tragic death has inspired me to become the person I have always wanted to be.”

What Maggie Didn't Know

Page 4 - Warning SignsA week after Maggie's death, a list of the Warning Signs of an Abusive Relationship was handed out on the college campus where Maggie was killed. It was then that Maggie’s family and friends realized that, although her ex-boyfriend had never touched or threatened her physically prior to the murder, he had committed many acts of verbal, emotional and psychological abuse, including refusing to accept the end of their relationship.

And there was more about that relationship that was disturbing and dangerous.

Maggie would have been outraged by the way she died. If it had happened to any one of her family or friends, she would be advocating tirelessly right now in their memory, fighting against violence against women. Today, Maggie’s legacy is that her story has inspired women and men throughout the world to advocate for and help those who have been abused and violated. She is remembered not only for how she died, but also for how she lived.
